About FamilySearch Pedigree Resource File:
The Pedigree Resource File is a new lineage linked database of
records available on compact disc containing family history records
submitted by individuals through FamilySearch Internet Genealogy
Service. Family information is organized in family groups and
pedigrees and includes submitted notes and sources. Many charts and
reports can be printed from this data. Each disc contains about 1.1
million names. With the publication of every five discs, a master
index for those discs will also be published and packaged with that
set of discs. Discs may be purchased individually or as sets.

Horton, Isaiah Sr. {I219} (b. 19 JAN 1736, d. ABT 1820)
Given Name: Isaiah
Note: "Isaiah Horton and Anna Wood came from Rhode Island about 1764 withseveral children, to Nova Scotia. He was in the Sackville, NS, (nowNB) 1770 census. His father, brothers and sisters families went toGuildford, VT." 1

The Pre-Loyalists
"English presence at Chedabucto started by the 1760's with thearrival of the "Nine Old Settlers". Captain Joseph Hadley received agrant of land at Chedabucto for his role in the Siege of Louisburg.Others who came from New England including the Callahans, Cooks,Godfreys, Hortons, Ingersols, Pearts, and Tobys settled on a piece ofland at the head of Chedabucto Bay bordered on one side by Cook's Coveand on the other by Ingersol's Cove. To this settlement, they gave thename Milford and to the harbor just inside Hadley's beach, the nameMilford Haven was given.
C Today it is known as Guysborough Harbour but the river flowing fromthe Intervale is still called the Milford Haven River." 2

Historic Nova Scotia by Hon A S MacMillian Minister of Highways, NS in1787 England granted to nine families nineteen hundred and seven acreson the hillside overlooking the Chedabucto Bay. Beginning at theSoutherly grant on the southerly side of Cook's Cove and extendingaround to the west and north to the Back Cove, the "nine old settlers:in that order of settlement were Isaiah Horton (southerly side ofCook's Cove), Nathaniel Toby (northerly side of Cook's Cove), RobertCallahan, John Godfrey's heirs, William Callaghan's heirs (brother ofRobert), Godfrey Peart and John Ingersoll (south shore of Back Cove.).3

These "nine old settlers" were probably pre-loyalists; i.e., they hadbeen living in some part of Nova Scotia for some time before the greatinflux of newcomers occurred as a result of the Revolutionary War. Noland grants had been given to the older group, but when these newlyarriving refugees were given their appointments, the claims of theolder occupants were recognized. Thus the grant of 1787 confirmingtheir rights.3

PLACE - NAMES AND PLACES OF NOVA SCOTIA by Charles Bruce Ferguson pg267 Guysborough, Guysborough County. Nine families of settlers took upresidence in the Cook's Cove area, possibly as early as 1768. Thewere: John and Elias Cook, Robert and Diana Callahan, Nathaniel Toby,Godfrey Peart, John Ingersoll, John Godfrey and ISAIAH HORTON. Thesepeople welcomed the regiments of disbanded troops who arrived here inJune 1784, after an unsuccessful attempt at making a settlement atPort Mouton. They laid out the town of Guysborough in 1790.3

GUYSBOROUGH SKETCHES & ESSAYS by A C Jost pg 267 shows the HORTONfamily with seven sons and daughters which Isaiah HORTON and his wifebrought from Pictou, and the number was increased after their arrivalby the birth of another son. Isaiah HORTON married Anna CLEAVES (thiswe believe should have been Anna WOOD), their children Isaiah,Stutely, William, Mary, George, Ann, Hezekiah and Charles born 2December 1785. (The above is probably not in order of birth, thoughIsaiah was the eldest, followed by Stutely, and Charles was theyoungest). (This may be incorrect, as Crown Land Records show thatStutley was born 1762, his parents were married on 14 February 1762,so possibly he was the eldest child.)3

THOMAS HORTON OF MILTON & REHOBOTH MASSACHUSETTS by Margaret Jenks VolII pg 634 shows that a correction should be made on Isaiah HORTON'swife. Ebenezer CLEAVES, weaver, of Beverly, in his will of 3 April1755 names all his children, living and dead and his grandchildren. From this will, it is clear that his daughter Anna had died withoutissue. (Essex Co. Probate).3

There was another Anna CLEAVES daughter of Ambrose and Mary (Taylor)CLEAVES of Beverly. She married (1) 2 November 1762 Stephen HASKELL,married (2) 27 November 1769 Elias COOK, Jr. They had Cook childrenborn in Beverly from 1770-1780 and several others after moving to NovaScotia. Their second child, Lydia married William HORTON. Elias Cook,Jr. died 25 August 1797. Isaiah HORTON could not have married this AnnCLEAVES until after this date, and by then she was 55 years old andcould not be the mother of any of his children.3

Therefore it was decided to use the information from a marriage recordfor Glocester, Rhode Island showing Isaiah was married on 14 February1762 to Anne WOOD born 16 February 1742 Glocester, daughter of Williamand Anna (Collins) WOOD of Warwick and Glocester, Rhode Island. (ACrown Land record states that Stutely HORTON was born in 1762).3

Pg 635 shows correction to show son Isaiah born "at sea" according tohis son James A's death record.3

PATTERSON'S "History of Pictou, NS" has a Roll to bear arms (seebelow) for 1783, which shows "Esaias and Stoatly HORTON". Mrs.Garrison believes it is Isaiah himself and not a son. Stutely wasmarried within a year of this date, so he was surely of age to beararms. She believes Stutley was the eldest son and that Jost was wrongin calling Isaiah the eldest.1

1770 Census Nova Scotia (some 1773 and 1787) by Mrs. Bernice C.Richard.
Pg 23-48 1770 Sackville, Nova Scotia (later became New Brunswick)shows a head of Family Isaiah HORTON with 1 man, 3 boys, 1 woman, 1girl with a total of 6. Shows all 6 as Protestants and all American.(So far have not been able to find birth records in USA for these 4children. A Crown Land Record shows that Stutley HORTON was born in1762).3

1795 Census Guysborough & Manchester, Nova Scotia, #73 Isaiah Horton,SR. 3

History of the County of Pictou by Rev. George Patterson pg 68: "Ofthe settlers who arrived, some took up land of the Philadelphiacompany, and occupied the west side of the West River, nearly up tothe ten mile house; others had their lots assigned to them in therear, but discouraged by their location in the woods, they eithermoved away or squatted in other places round the harbour, withouttitles. Besides those already mentioned, we find the name Jonas Earl, who had is farm to the west of Watson's already mentioned; and IsaiahHorton, who lived to the east of him."3

Pg 88: "...He then went to a heap where Horton, one of the oldsettlers, had buried some potatoes, and took out some. Before he couldinform the owner of what he had done, some of his neighborsmaliciously did so, when Horton merely replied that he thanked God hehad them there for the poor old man's family."1

Pg 100: "The squire also attempted to arrest some of the old settlers, who had openly declared their determination to swear no oath ofallegiance, while the others endeavored to conceal them. We haveheard, for example, of HORTON being obliged to hide under ahaystack."1

PG 450 List of the number of Families in the District of Pictou, Viz.
Among the names is Isaiah HORTON. November 8, 1775. Signed JohnHarris. A number of these, set down as families, however wereunmarried men at this time. Upon this petition was presented to theGovernor to issue a writ for the election of representative, but therequest was not granted.1

PG 458 A Roll of the Inhabitants of Pictou or Tinmouth Capable to BearArms. Among these names is "Esiais Horton" (Isaiah), Stoatly(Stutely) HORTON. The above a true list, given under my hand atHalifax, 12 February 1783. Robt. Patterson (Capt. Robert Patterson.)1

PG 471 POSTSCRIPT - After the greater part of the foregoing work wasprinted, we received the following statement, as made by the lateJames Patterson3

"When the "Hector" arrived here in 1773, there were but nine huts inthe whole of the present county, Viz., one at Howlets (a little aboveNorway House), just new, occupied by Robert Patterson; one at JohnBrown's farm, occupied by Dr. Harris; one at James Rae's, occupied byJohn Rogers; one at Saw Mill, occupied by Kennedy and Blaisdell; oneat Fraser's farm (now Evan's), by James McCabe; one at Dunoon's farm,on the hill, by Mr. Earl; one at David Lowden's farm, by Mr. Watson,;one at West River, at Davidson's farm, by Mr. Aitkin; one at WestRiver, at Beck's farm, by Barney McGee."3

We are satisfied that this is imperfect, as Matthew Harris wascertainly here in 1773; also HORTON, and probably some others. Watsonlived, and soon after died, at West River, where Robert Stewart nowlives. It would seem also that the place where we mentioned JohnRogers as having located himself on Rogers Hill, was not where hefirst lived. We may have made a mistake at page 102, in describing theseizure of Captain Lowden as having taken place in the house of Mr.Waugh. The gentleman who gave us the history, the late Robert McKay,Esq, and who received it from Captain Lowden himself, said that ittook place in the house of the man who lived on Dunoon's farm. Waugh,we knew, lived there, but Earl, who was a keen American sympathizer, may have been still there, and it may have taken place in his house3
